Ad Breaks on Facebook_ What You Need to Know

Ad breaks on Facebook have become a powerful tool for creators and publishers to monetize their video content. Ad breaks are short advertisements that play before or during longer videos on Facebook , helping to build loyal fan bases. Publishers and creators can choose which videos to monetize, and we customize the ad experience based on where viewers are watching—whether it’s in the News Feed, on your Pages, in a Group, or on Watch.

Types of ad breaks

Currently, there are three types of ad breaks: mid-roll, pre-roll, and image ads.

Mid-roll

Mid-roll ads are advertisements that play in the middle of a video, capturing viewers’ attention when they’re already engaged. On Facebook, these ads are a popular way for creators to monetize longer videos. By integrating seamlessly into content, mid-roll ads provide a smooth viewing experience while maximizing revenue for publishers. They offer a powerful opportunity for both advertisers and creators to reach and engage their audience effectively.

Pre-roll

Pre-roll ads are short advertisements that play before a video begins. On Facebook, these ads are used by publishers and creators to monetize their content right from the start. Since they appear before the main video, pre-roll ads are highly effective in capturing the audience’s attention when they are most focused. This makes them a valuable tool for advertisers looking to deliver their message immediately and maximize viewer engagement.

Image ads

Image ads are static advertisements that appear within videos on platforms like Facebook. Unlike video ads, these are still images displayed for a few seconds, making them less intrusive while delivering a clear message. Image ads are an effective way for publishers and creators to monetize their content without disrupting the viewer’s experience. These ads work well for quick, impactful messaging and can be tailored to match the content’s theme.

Best Practices for Eligible Ad Breaks

The key to becoming eligible for ad breaks and earning significant revenue starts with creating content viewers tell us they love: longer videos that people actively seek out and want to return to. While our eligibility standards provide basic guidelines to help publishers and creators start making money with ad breaks , we’ve found that those who follow certain best practices achieve the most success:

Create Longer Content

Producing longer, thematic content offers more opportunities for fan engagement and keeps your audience coming back for more.

Build a Loyal Audience

Viewers search for content they love in places like Watchlist and Search. Having an audience eager to watch your latest video increases the likelihood of monetization.

Engage Your Community

Creating meaningful content that resonates with your community encourages them to engage and watch more of your video. The stronger the connection with your audience, the more likely they will continue watching after an ad break.

Step 1: Check Eligibility and Onboard to Ad Breaks

There are several ways to check your eligibility and onboard to ad breaks:

  • Visit fb. me/joinadbreaks to check the eligibility of your Pages and immediately onboard to ad breaks.
  • Upload videos via the video composer. If your Page is eligible for ad breaks, an option to onboard will appear as you upload qualifying video content.
  • Stay tuned for notifications from Facebook. We’ll alert you through your Page, email, or Creator Studio when your Page qualifies for ad breaks.

Step 2: After Onboarding

  • Optimize Ad Placements: Save time and enhance ad performance with our Automatic Placements feature. It’s enabled by default when a Page onboards to ad breaks and identifies natural spots within your videos.
  • Customize Ad Placements: Choose ad placements per video instead of letting Facebook automatically select spots. While uploading videos, publishers can manually pick where an ad break will appear in the content.
  • Monetize Previous Videos: Use Creator Studio to monetize your back catalog of eligible videos. Pages can now enable Automatic Placements for all previously uploaded videos that qualify for ad breaks.

Step 3: Monitor Performance in Creator Studio

  • Track Monetization Insights: Use Creator Studio to review key metrics for your monetized videos.
  • Check Estimated Earnings: See how much you’re earning from ad breaks with detailed earnings reports.
